It's difficult to make a coherent case that news media isn't biased. This leads to the obvious problem, of course, that you can't fully trust what you're reading or hearing. Now, certainly it may be a stretch to say that things are so dire that news media is useless, or anything like that. But at the same time, it probably requires some discretion on the part of the viewer or reader to make sure they're not being sold beachfront property in Montana!
So in this thread, we are going to discuss the news media we primarily use to get our information, and why we use it.
I think the source of news I trust the most is The Economist. It's not that it's unbiased, but that it admits its bias and generally does its best to hear other sides of the argument. It also covers a very broad range of topics, from politics to business to technology, and has a global scope.
Another news source I find highly respectable is Channel 4 News, a British TV news program. I recall a poll awhile back which said this is Britain's least trusted major television news source, and I honestly have no idea why. It is, for my money, the best, most thorough, and most rigorous news show I've ever seen on TV. It is not impartial, but even when it has had an angle I don't agree with, it is thorough and it will press bullshit. It's a full hour long, and it will generally devote time to stories that make sure they are properly investigated. Unlike other news shows, I've seen interviews here last between five and ten minutes, and where the interviewer is properly pressured to account for what they are arguing.
Less for analysis, and more to simply keep up with what's going on, I check CNN and BBC news websites throughout the day. Their analysis is not amazing, and their standard of journalism is not atrocious, but not exemplary either. However they do the job I need them to of just keeping me informed. They give me both a US and UK perspective on the news, and give me more stories to investigate.
Finally, among the major ones I use, is The New York Times website. This is probably the best news website I've come across, as it is thorough and detailed, as well as including a spectrum of articles, from pure news to opinion to detailed features and reports. As per usual, not unbiased, but it tends to make its case well enough that I can accept the bias as a legitimate perspective to be considered, rather than discarding it purely because it is biased.
And now it is your turn! Go forth in this thread and discuss the news you use, and matters relating. Oh, and I should mention, I'm intending this to be for general news, rather than specialist stuff like for business or medicine or anything.
